How to Draw a 16Γ—16 Prismatic Knuckle-Guard Steel Sword in Pixel Art

This compact sword uses an unusually rich steel ramp. Base, muted, light, near-white, shadow, charcoal, and deep-steel cells turn a narrow diagonal into a sequence of bright facets. A long black knuckle bow protects the small warm guard and leather grip below it.

Step 1: outline the blade and long knuckle guard

Place all 40 black pixels. Begin with a three-cell blade cap at x1–3 on row 1, then follow this row map:

The short black pairs define the blade. The separate right-hand chain becomes the knuckle bow, so keep the open cells between it and the grip transparent.

Step 2: lay in eight midtone steel facets

Use base steel #A5C9C9 at:

(2,2), (3,2), (2,3), (8,7), (7,8)

Add muted steel #608888 at (3,3), (4,4), and (7,7). The upper five cells widen the blade near its tip. The lower three establish a darker centre line before the blade reaches the guard.

Step 3: add six bright blade highlights

Place light steel #CEECEC at (4,3), (3,4), and (7,6). Then use the near-white gleam #F4FEFE at (4,5), (6,5), and (5,6).

Do not arrange all six on one diagonal. Their alternating positions make the blade look faceted: light catches first on the upper edge, then jumps across the middle before returning near the root.

Step 4: deepen eight blade-root shadows

Add shadow steel #83A3A3 at (5,5), (6,6), (9,8), and (8,9).

Use charcoal steel #2F4049 at (8,8) and (9,9), followed by deep steel #476367 at (10,9) and (9,10). These last four cells form a dark diamond around the socket. The blade remains straight; only its value planes rotate.

Step 5: finish eight warm hilt details

Place warm copper #E0993C at (12,8), (11,9), (9,11), and (8,12). Add dark leather #7E4E26 at (11,11) and (13,13).

Finish with gold #FBBD5D at (10,10) and deep copper #C07F3A at (12,12). The single gold cell is the visual pivot between blade and grip. The darker copper cell anchors the far side of the lower guard without competing with it.

What this sprite teaches

  • Highlights can zigzag across a straight blade. Changing light placement creates facets without bending the silhouette.
  • A broad palette still needs grouped passes. Midtones, highlights, and shadows remain easier to control when drawn separately.
  • Dark root values create depth. The charcoal diamond makes the blade appear seated inside the guard.
  • A knuckle bow is mostly negative space. The long black chain reads as protection because its interior remains empty.
  • One gold cell can be enough. Concentrating the brightest warm colour at the blade junction gives the hilt a clear focal point.
