A crochet chart maker for pictures, names and pixel art
Use this crochet graph maker to turn an image into a rectangular color chart for flat US single crochet. Each grid square represents one stitch. Crop a photo, simplify its colors and correct the outline by hand before you begin making.
The same crochet grid maker accepts text and blank grids. Make an alphabet chart or a name, open an original example, then use one project to edit the pattern, follow color changes, estimate yarn and print. The output describes color placement; it is not a complete garment, toy or shaping pattern.
How to make a crochet graph
- Choose Image, Text or Blank, or open an editable example. For a photo, upload the file and crop to the subject; the preview updates automatically.
- Choose a detail level, color budget and palette. Check small features, then select Use this chart to edit individual stitches, fill areas, mirror a motif or merge colors.
- Add a measured swatch when you need physical dimensions. Use Make to follow each row, Yarn for a measured estimate and Print to download the chart.
What your crochet chart includes
- An editable grid of up to 300 stitches across and 300 rows, with up to 32 colors in the shared editor.
- Color letters, stitch counts and optional yarn notes, so similar colors remain distinguishable on screen and in print.
- Bottom-up, alternating row directions and continuous color groups for the supported flat single-crochet mode.
- Free PDF, PNG and portable project JSON downloads. PDF options include an overview, numbered detail pages, a legend and row instructions.
Crochet graph generator questions
How do I turn an image or photo into a crochet pattern?
Upload a JPEG, PNG or static WebP image, crop it and choose the chart width and color budget. The generator reduces the picture to stitch squares. Open the result in the editor to fix important details, then download a color chart or PDF row instructions. This creates a single-crochet color pattern, not instructions for constructing any object shown in the photo.
Can I use this as a crochet name pattern generator?
Yes. Choose Text, enter a name or multiple lines, and select a solid or outline pixel alphabet. Adjust size, alignment, letter spacing and margins before opening the chart. Supported letters and numbers appear in the preview; unsupported characters produce an error rather than disappearing from your name.
Is this a tapestry crochet pattern maker?
You can use the color grid for a rectangular flat single-crochet colorwork project. Ovopixel does not teach or validate every tapestry method, carried-yarn technique or in-the-round pattern. Filet, C2C and mosaic use different rules and are not generated by the current mode.
Is the crochet chart maker free, and do I need an account?
Creating, editing and downloading a chart is free and does not require sign-in. A local draft stays in this browser. Sign in when you want to save a private account project, and download a project JSON file if you need an independent backup.
Which images and chart sizes are supported?
Use a static JPEG, PNG or WebP file no larger than 20 MB or 25 million pixels. The editor supports up to 300 × 300 stitches and 32 colors. If your chosen image proportions would exceed the row limit, reduce the width or crop the image; the generator does not silently cut off the excess rows.
What happens to a transparent background?
Transparent pixels become stitches in the background color you choose. They are not holes, skipped stitches or filet mesh. In the editor, the erase tool paints with that background color so the rectangular single-crochet chart remains complete.
How do I know the finished size of my crochet graph?
Measure a swatch made with your actual yarn, hook and stitch, then add its stitch count, row count and measured area. The workbench uses that gauge to estimate dimensions and show stitch proportions. Without a swatch, it reports stitches and rows rather than guessing a finished size.
Can I print the graph or follow it on my phone?
Yes. Print creates A4 or US Letter PDFs with readable detail squares and page coordinates. You can include a color legend and row-by-row color sequences. Make highlights the current row and color group on screen; advancing a group and confirming Finish row are separate actions, and you can undo a mistake.
