Crochet Yarn Calculator

Calculate how much yarn you need from a measured swatch, or find a project size that fits your yarn stock. Open Yarn in a chart to estimate each color separately.

Your measured swatch

Measure the fabric you made with your yarn, hook and stitch. Choose the area you actually measured, then count the stitches and rows.

The yarn amount must cover this many stitches. If you weighed the full swatch but measured gauge only in the middle, use the full stitch count here. Weight and length cannot be interchanged.

Calculate crochet yarn from measured consumption

Estimate how much yarn you need by measuring what your own swatch used. Enter the stitches in the full counted swatch and its yarn weight or length, then apply that consumption to your project. A stitch count alone cannot reliably tell you grams or yards.

Use this page for a single-yarn grid, or open Yarn inside a crochet chart for a separate estimate for each color. Choose the actual amount per ball, add an optional reserve and download a materials list. Available-stock mode works backwards from the yarn you have to a possible project size.

How to estimate yarn for a crochet project

  1. Make a swatch with the same yarn, hook and stitch as your project. Record gauge separately, and measure the yarn used by the complete counted swatch.
  2. Choose grams, meters or yards, enter the full swatch stitch count and consumed amount, then provide project counts or open the chart's Yarn view.
  3. Choose the actual packaging amount and any reserve. Review base use, extra and rounded-up whole balls, or switch to stock mode to check a possible size.

What the yarn estimate shows

  • Base amount = project stitches ÷ full counted swatch stitches × measured yarn use. Extra reserve is shown separately.
  • 0%, 10%, 20% or custom reserve, starting with 0% so no unrequested allowance is hidden in the base estimate.
  • 25, 50 and 100 amount presets plus custom packaging, with whole balls rounded up in the same unit as the consumption measurement.
  • Per-color use and stock limits inside a chart, with a CSV materials download and a checked new chart copy when fitting the design to stock.

Crochet yarn calculator questions

How much yarn do I need to crochet my project?

Measure the yarn used by a complete counted swatch made with your project yarn, hook and stitch. The calculator multiplies that consumption per stitch by the project's stitch count. It then shows your chosen reserve and rounds up to whole balls using the actual packaging amount.

Why does the yarn calculator need a swatch?

Yarn use varies with stitch, yarn, hook and tension. Grid dimensions describe stitch positions, not a fixed weight or length. A measured swatch gives the calculator a consumption rate for your fabric; without that input it does not invent a yarn estimate.

Can I calculate crochet yarn yardage instead of grams?

Yes. Choose yards or meters and enter the measured yarn length used by the counted swatch. Use the same unit for stock and each ball's amount. Switching units clears incompatible consumption and packaging values so weight and length are not mixed.

Can the calculator convert grams to yards?

No. Grams measure weight and yards measure length; the relationship depends on the particular yarn. Use the length printed on that yarn's label or measure consumption in your chosen unit. The calculator does not assume that every 50 g ball contains the same length.

How many balls of yarn should I buy?

Enter the actual usable amount in one ball or skein, using the same unit as your estimate. Whole balls are rounded up separately for each color in a chart. For example, an estimate of 65 g with 50 g balls needs two whole balls before considering any yarn you already have.

Does the estimate include extra for color changes and finishing?

The first-use estimate starts at 0% reserve. You can choose 10%, 20% or a custom amount for your own situation; base use and extra are displayed separately. Carried yarn, tails, borders and different stitch techniques may change consumption, so compare a representative swatch and do not treat the reserve as a guarantee.

Can I find out what size I can make with the yarn I have?

Yes. Choose What can I make with my yarn?, enter your available amount and choose a shape. In a chart, each color is limited by its own stock; surplus in one color cannot cover a shortage in another. A resized copy is rechecked after resampling, and you should inspect the motif before making it.

Should I enter the weight of my whole swatch or just the measured center?

The consumed amount must match the complete stitch count you enter for it. If you weigh a larger swatch but measure gauge only in its center, keep those two measurements separate. Do not apply the larger swatch's weight to only the center's stitch count, because that would overstate consumption.
